DAN O'BRIEN broke the world record in the decathlon which had stood for eight years yesterday, finishing with 8,891 points in a meeting in Bordeaux.
O'Brien's mark broke the record of 8,847 points set by Daley Thompson, of Britain, at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.
O'Brien, aged 26, from Moscow, Idaho, was the 1991 world champion. It was the first decathlon he had finished since winning the world title in Tokyo. He was not selected for the American Olympic team after failing to register a height in the pole vault at the US trials.
