A surprise victory for Austria in Sweden last night means that Scotland will go to the top of World Cup qualifying Group Four if they are awarded their unplayed game in Estonia by default.

Despite the defeat, the first time they have lost at home to the Austrians, Sweden maintain the lead in the group with six points from three games, with Scotland and Austria currently tied on four points.

The only goal came after 11 minutes when the Werder Bremen striker Andreas Herzog hit a low shot past the Swedish goalkeeper Thomas Ravelli.

Just as important to the victory, though, was a penalty save by Michael Konsel after half an hour. Midfielder Markus Schopp fouled Jesper Blomqvist, but Konsel comfortably saved Kenneth Andersson's spot- kick.

Portugal beat Albania 3-0 at the Qemal Stafa stadium in Tirana yesterday in their Group Nine World Cup qualifier, a much-needed victory for the Portuguese who lost their first match to Ukraine last week. Luis Figo opened the scoring in the 11th minute, but Portugal had to wait until the 75th minute for a second from Helder Cristovao. Rui Costa added the third goal in the 87th minute.
