Bailey asserts his superiority

The Canadians Donovan Bailey and Bruny Surin finished first and second in the 60 metres at the Millrose games in New York on Friday night. Bailey, the world 100m champion, clocked 6.56 seconds to beat his compatriot by 0.03 sec. Gwen Torrence, the women's 100m world champion, burst from the blocks and led all the way to win the 60m in 7.02 sec, a personal best. "I'd love to break the seven-second barrier," Torrence said. "All of my top competitors have done that except me." Sergei Bubka won the pole vault at the third attempt with a best leap of 5.85m. The 32-year-old Ukrainian world record holder had seen two previous visits to the meeting end in failure.
