Barrie McDermott, Wigan's international prop, was yesterday suspended for five matches by the disciplinary committee after being sent off for head-butting in a reserve game against Hull last Thursday.

Whitehaven's Kurt Sorensen has been appointed coach of Stones Centenary Championship side Workington Town.

Mark Sheals, the Wales prop, has rejoined second division Swinton for pounds 15,000.

Tommy Martyn, St Helens' half-back, is facing a nine-month lay-off after being told he needs major knee surgery.
