The Classic Cola National Cup ran out of glamour for Converse Crystal Palace on Saturday night when last season's semi-finalists were beaten 91-61 by Manchester Giants at the Nynex arena.
Palace's wins last season over Doncaster Panthers and Leopards helped earn them promotion to the Budweiser League. But the Londoners, still waiting for work permits for Americans Tim Garrett and Paul Grant, were outclassed as the Giants clinched a quarter-final away against the holders, London Towers.
Joe Hooks led London's scorers with 16 points in their 95-55 victory at Cardiff Phoenix. Two free-throws from England's Peter Scantlebury kept Thames Valley Tigers in the cup with an 80-79 win over Derby Storm.
