Becker out of Davis Cup
The new Australian Open champion Boris Becker has a serious calf strain and will not play in next week's Davis Cup match against Switzerland, German team chief Niki Pilic said yesterday. "This is a big disappointment for me," Pilic said. "But it is also a big shock for Boris. He had just found his form." The three-times Wimbledon champion said that he picked up the injury during the Australian Open, which he won last Sunday. "In the heat of battle you don't notice little injuries." Becker said. "But in the last few days it's got worse." He is expected to be out of action for up to four weeks. The British No 1, Tim Henman, was beaten 4-6 6-4 6-4 by Russia's Andrei Olhovskiy in the semi-finals of the ATP Shanghai Open yesterday. The 21-year-old is now certain to improve his current No 84 world ranking. The world No 3, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, will meet Iva Majoli of Croatia in the final of the Pan Pacific Open tournament in Tokyo. Third seed Sanchez Vicario beat fellow Spaniard and second seed Conchita Martinez 6-4 5-7 6-4. Seventh seed Majoli beat 15-year-old Martina Hingis, of Switzerland, 3-6 6-3 6-0.
