Lance Hobson, the Australian featherweight, remained in a critical condition in a Melbourne hospital after neurosurgeons removed a blood clot from the outside of the boxer's brain. The 23-year-old Hobson collapsed in the sixth round of a scheduled eight-round bout at the Glasshouse arena, stumbling from his stool while his opponent Liu Gang, of China, was still in his corner.

Joe Calzaghe, the Welsh super-middleweight, returns to the ring on Saturday - 14 days after his fifth-round stoppage of Mark Delaney for the British title - to fight Sonny Brennan, of North Dakota, in a 10-round bout at the Goresbrook Leisure Centre in Dagenham.
