LENNOX LEWIS will defend his World Boxing Council heavyweight title against the American Oliver McCall at Wembley Arena on Saturday, 24 September. It will be the champion's first fight in London since knocking out Razor Ruddock at Earls Court in November 1992.
Like that fight, which in effect won Lewis the world title when Riddick Bowe was stripped of the WBC crown, the McCall bout will be staged at around 1am to fit into American television schedules. Since then, Lewis has successfully defended his WBC crown against Tony Tucker in Las Vegas, Frank Bruno in Cardiff and, most recently, Phil Jackson in Atlantic City two months ago.
A pounds 20m meeting with Bowe could take place in December or next March, according to the champion's manager, Frank Maloney.
