OXFORD won the 83rd University match at Oxford Town Hall last night, beating Cambridge by five bouts to four in a closely fought encounter that was supposed to be a mismatch, writes Jonathan Rendall.

Despite being unbeaten this year at any weight, Oxford had to rely on their heavyweight, John Roberts, a former Australian Rules football player, to secure victory. Roberts, from Magdalen College, attacked his opponent, Howie Shek, from Trinity, Cambridge, from the first bell and had him over from a barrage of blows within the first minute. Soon afterwards the towel fluttered in from the Cambridge corner amid excitable scenes at the town hall.

The best bout saw Oxford's Alex Mehta (Oriel) outpoint John Sawtell (Churchill).
