Savannah Marshall calls for Claressa Shields rematch despite major setback

Shields has been called out ahead of defending her heavyweight titles this weekend

Savannah Marshall has revealed she is still targeting a rematch with Claressa Shields despite losing her world title to Shadasia Green earlier this month.

Marshall and Shields fought at the O2 Arena in 2022, with Shields winning on points to avenge an amateur loss to her rival a decade earlier.

The Brit has since called for a second shot at Shields, but was beaten by Green in their super-middleweight clash on the undercard of Katie Taylor’s trilogy fight with Amanda Serrano.

Marshall admits this might have damaged her chances of getting back in the ring with Shields, but insists it remains one of the biggest fights in women’s boxing.

She told BBC Radio Tees: “My fight with Claressa is 10 times as big as Claressa versus Shadasia Green. I just want that Claressa rematch. I really do.”

Marshall remains the only fighter to beat Shields, with the American superstar set to be back in action this weekend to defend her heavyweight titles against Lani Daniels, live on DAZN.

Should Shields come through that, Marshall believes a return fight with her nemesis is still on the cards.

“I’ve waited two-and-a-half years, coming up on three years, for that rematch,” she added. “Now I’ve lost my world titles and I’ve been beaten, it’s probably less likely to happen. But I do think it’s still an option, especially with the Netflix platform [that aired Taylor vs Serrano].”

Marshall turned 34 in May, and there has been some speculation she could retire after losing to Green. But the ex-world champion insists she is not ready to walk away from the sport just yet.

Marshall explained: “I remember my first amateur coach saying to me, ‘You will wake up one day and you just won’t want to do it any more.’ But this is the train I’m on at the minute. It hasn’t stopped yet.”
