Canelo Alvarez has warned Gennady Golovkin that he is not interested in a trilogy fight because he is “done” with facing his middleweight rival – unless it’s the fight that his fans want to see.

Canelo emerged unscathed from his middleweight unification bout against Daniel Jacobs on Saturday night after securing a unanimous decision win by scores of 115-113, 115-113 and 116-112, adding the IBF title to the WBC and WBA championships that he already held.

The 28-year-old will now turn his attentions towards WBO champion Demetrius Andrade – who was watching ringside along with Golovkin – in order to try and unify the entire division and become the first undisputed middleweight champion since Roy Jones in December 2006.

Immediately after the fight, which saw Canelo rack up a 52nd victory in his 55th professional bout, he was asked who he would prefer to fight next out of the pair, and while he did not specifically name Andrade, he left it in little doubt that a third bout with Golovkin is not currently on the table.

“I’m just looking for the biggest challenge and I want that to be my next fight,” said Canelo.

Asked about facing Golovkin for a third time, he answered: “No, for me we’re done, but if the people want another fight then we’ll do it again and I’ll beat him again.

“That’s why I’m here, that’s what I was born for, to fight and defend what’s mine and I’ll fight anyone. Viva Mexico!"

But despite being told his chances were slim of facing Canelo again, Golovkin appeared to try and respark the rivalry between the pair by labelling the Las Vegas title fight “boring”.

“It was a little boring because they are both high-level boxers,” Golovkin said after the bout. “They should give more to the audience, the boxing community. I didn’t see any emotions. I didn’t see anything special. Just a good sparring match.”

The likelihood is that Canelo and Golovkin will square-off at least one more time after the Kazakh signed up to a six-fight deal with DAZN worth $100m, and he even hinted at further his career beyond that despite turning 37 years old last month.

“I hope, actually, I’m sure there will be a third fight,” Golovkin added.
