David Price is to fight Russia's Alexander Povetkin on the undercard of Anthony Joshua's March 31 world heavyweight unification title showdown against Joseph Parker.

The heavyweight, 34, has fought and won only once since being stopped by Christian Hammer 12 months ago, when he considered retirement before appointing Derry Mathews as his new trainer, and he has been presented with the chance to revive his career.

Povetkin is the mandatory challenger to Joshua's WBA title - the champion will also defend that of the IBF and fight for Parker's WBO championship at Cardiff's Principality Stadium - and defeated Hammer in December.

The 38-year-old Russian is in contention to fight Joshua later this year, but Price said: “It is a massive, massive chance for me and it has come from nowhere. I wasn't expecting an opportunity like this to appear so it was a no-brainer.

“It is a big ask for me to go out and win but upsets do happen. I have been on the wrong end of upsets and am due a bit of luck. This fight has come at the right time for me and I have a belief that I am going to win.”

Povetkin said: “I expect to put on a great performance. Then go on to fight the Joshua-Parker winner later this year.”
