Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor: Boxing legend accepts challenge of lighter gloves from UFC star

The Irishman complained of the power held by his rival in the negotiations

Floyd Mayweather is not going to leave Conor McGregor with any excuses after 26^th August as he appeared to accept the Irishman’s request to wear lighter gloves for their Las Vegas showdown.

McGregor taunted his American rival during their four-stop international press conferences last month over the strict stipulations he claimed he was under over the make of the gloves he could wear, or the weight of them.

The pair are meant to wear 10oz gloves – which is the standard for a super welterweight bout – with only lower weight divisions using the lighter 8oz ones.

In UFC, the gloves are a lot lighter, thus giving Mayweather a significant advantage over McGregor – something that had riled 29-year-old.

However, Mayweather now seems to have ceded to McGregor’s request after announcing on Instagram that he was happy to go ahead with using the smaller, lighter gloves and consequently foregoing the extra protection given by heavier gloves.

“Don't believe what you hear in the media,” the 40-year-old wrote on the social media platform. “Don't believe what you hear on blog sites. If it's not coming directly from me, then it's not true.

“I’m telling McGregor, ‘Let's fight in 8oz gloves’. McGregor can fight in any brand he prefers or chooses. I'll be wearing 8oz Grant gloves.

“Whatever advantage McGregor needs to feel more comfortable in the ring, I'm willing to accommodate. Let's give the boxing and MMA fans what they want to see.”
