With the Varsity match just two weeks away, Cambridge had some useful shooting practice at the weekend when they thrashed Colchester 8-0 in an Adnams East Premier League game, with last year's captain Tom McCarthy and fresher Giles Osborne each scoring twice, writes Bill Colwill. Cambridge's Dutch secretary, Fedor Schulten, celebrated his 22nd birthday with a rare goal.

Over at Oxford the Dark Blues beat Isca 1-0 in a National League Second Division game, with last year's captain, Peter Bell, claiming a penalty corner strike.

A last-minute goal from Andy Cook gave Ipswich a 1-0 win against Redbridge and Ilford to keep them five points clear of Peterborough Town at the top of the East Premier. Peterborough, with goals from Steve Gregory, Jim Tansley and Peter Hings, beat Chelmsford 3-1. The University are in third place.
