Chiesa sours Milan's title celebrations

Enrico Chiesa is obviously no respecter of reputations. Yesterday the prolific Sampdoria striker single-handedly brought the newly crowned Italian champions, Milan, to their knees with two goals in a surprise 3-0 home victory for the Genoa side.

The prolific Chiesa took less than 60 seconds to halt Milan's week-long celebrations of their 15th title, pouncing on Christian Karembeu's wayward shot to beat Sebastiano Rossi. In the 35th minute, Chiesa, who is expected to play a key role in Italy's European Championship campaign this summer, unleashed a tremendous shot from 20 metres that flew into Rossi's top corner for his 22nd goal of the season.

The veteran playmaker Roberto Mancini completed Milan's third defeat of the season with the third goal four minutes later.

Back at the San Siro, England's Paul Ince helped to condemn Bari to Serie B with the opening goal in Inter's 3-0 win - Marco Branca and Maurizio Ganz scored the others - but his side's hopes of a Uefa Cup place suffered a blow, because Roma came from behind to thrash Fiorentina 4-1 in Florence. Argentina's Abel Balbo scored twice for them from the penalty spot and the Italy Under-21 striker Marco Delvecchio scored the other two.

Juventus, the European Cup finalists, ensured a place in Europe next season with a 1-0 home win over Atalanta, courtesy of a Didier Deschamps goal, while third-placed Parma look certain to join them after a 1-0 defeat of relegated Torino.

The Dutch champions, Ajax, ended the season quietly with a 0-0 draw at De Graafschap, but Roda JC routed NAC 5-1 to earn the chance of joining Feyenoord in the Uefa Cup. Their place depends second-placed PSV Eindhoven beating Sparta Rotterdam in the Dutch Cup final and not needing their Uefa Cup place.
