Commonwealth Games: Doubt over Surin

BRUNY SURIN, the world indoor 60 metres champion, who was expected to be one of Linford Christie's main rivals in the Commonwealth 100m, is to have a fitness test today on his injured left knee, writes Duncan Mackay. The Canadian will withdraw if he feels he cannot do himself justice.

The field for the 100m, which takes place next Tuesday, includes the world 200m champion, Frankie Fredericks, of Namibia, and the Nigerians, Olapade Adeniken and Daniel Effiong, who have both broken 10sec this year.

Sarah Hardcastle expects to be fit for her opening heat of the 400m freestyle on Sunday despite suffering a hand injury in training. Her left hand was badly damaged when she hit it heavily on one of the lane dividers in the pool on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, limited-overs cricket, seven-a-side rugby union and men and women's field hockey have been approved in principle as additions to the list of sports at the 1998 Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Squash will replace wrestling, while netball will be included for the first time.
