County Cricket Round-up: Watkin's reminder: Glamorgan move up to the top

ELIGIBLE and successful England bowlers being a rarity at the moment, Steve Watkin reminded the beleaguered selectors of his ability with four more wickets for Glamorgan, writes Richard Wetherell. Lest they forget, they thought him good enough two years ago for two matches against the West Indies. Yesterday he helped Glamorgan to their fourth win of the season and to the top of the table.

These four took his total for the season to 48 - no one, not even Messrs Hughes or Warne has more - and Durham were condemned to yet another defeat, their fourth out of seven championship matches this season, this time by 113 runs.

Lancashire showed how to chase a total. Sussex set them 326 and with openers Gehan Mendis and Steve Titchard putting on their second century partnership of the game, they sauntered home by four wickets. Titchard hit 87, Mendis two less, and with Nick Speak chipping in with 59 and Neil Fairbrother 37, the home side won with an hour to spare.

It was less hard work at Northampton, play finished 25 minutes after lunch as Kevan James and Paul Terry helped Hampshire to a seven-wicket victory. They resumed on 91 for 1, requiring another 91. Curtly Ambrose had Steve Morris caught behind without adding to his overnight 41 but James and Terry then added 62 in 16 overs.

James was run out for 71 with just 22 required so it was left to Paul Terry, another who was unfortunate to be picked twice for England against the West Indies, to complete the win with an unbeaten 58 that included 10 fours.
