THE SRI LANKA opener Russel Arnold carried his bat for an unbeaten century here as the Third and final Test against Zimbabwe remained finely poised after a shortened third day.

Only three-and-a-quarter hours of play were possible due to bad light and by stumps Zimbabwe had reached 48 for 2 in their second innings - a lead of 35 runs after dismissing the Sri Lankans for 231.

The Zimbabwe openers Grant Flower, who made 13, and Craig Wishart (9) were both dismissed by Chaminda Vaas as the Sri Lankan bowlers looked to build on the efforts of Arnold.

Sri Lanka, who are 1-0 up in the series, had resumed still 59 runs in arrears on 159 for 7. But Arnold was well supported by the tail as he advanced from 65 to 104 not out before running out of partners.

Arnold's second Test century contained 14 fours and he faced 243 balls in an innings that lasted six-and-a-quarter hours.

Arnold's feat means that he and Marvan Atapattu, who scored a double century at Bulawayo, became the first openers in Test history to carry their bats on the same tour.
