Cricket: Caddick takes five on a day for the bowlers
ANDY CADDICK and Graham Rose took five wickets apiece as Somerset dismissed Northamptonshire for 187 at Taunton yesterday. Caddick's 5 for 70 raised his wicket tally for the season to 60 while Rose claimed 5 for 57 on a quick and bouncy pitch.
The home batsmen fared just as badly, ending the day on 135 for 6 with off-spinner Jason Brown taking three wickets.
Hampshire's Nixon McLean ran through a weakened Essex side by taking 5 for 37 at Portsmouth. Essex, bottom of the table and without several key players, were dismissed for 141 in the 46th over.
McLean was ably supported by Peter Hartley, the veteran former Yorkshire pace bowler, who took 4 for 42.
Hampshire finished the first day 50 runs ahead with three wickets down. Ominously for Essex, Robin Smith is unbeaten on 78.
The second women's Test between England and Australia ended in a tame draw yesterday. The Harrogate pitch conceded 999 runs for just 16 wickets over the four days.
