Match drawn
THE Australian fast bowler, Damien Fleming, took a hat- trick on his Test debut and the Pakistan captain, Salim Malik, made a record-breaking double century as the second Test ended in a draw in Rawalpindi yesterday.
Pakistan, who followed on 261 behind, were all out for 537 on the final day, and the match ended with Australia 14 for 1 in their second innings.
The draw ensured Pakistan take a 1-0 series lead into the third and last Test starting in Lahore on 1 November.
Fleming becomes the third bowler to have a hat-trick in his first Test when he took wickets with the last two deliveries of his 23rd over and the first of his 24th, removing Aamir Malik (65), Inzamam- ul-Haq and Salim Malik.
Salim, who resumed on 155 out of the overnight 324 for 2, went on to 237 - his first double-century in 79 Tests and the highest score by a Pakistani against Australia.
Pakistan's fightback - they were dismissed for 260 in their first innings after Australia made 521 for 9 declared - was spearheaded by Salim, whose innings of 328 balls contained 34 fours.
Salim beat the previous Test best by a Pakistani against Australia of 211 by the former captain, Javed Miandad, at Karachi in the 1988 series.
Fleming is among a trio completed by the England medium-pacer, Maurice Allom, who took a Test debut hat-trick against New Zealand at Christchurch during the 1929-30 tour, and the New Zealand off-spinner, Peter Petherick, whose debut hat- trick was against Pakistan at Lahore in the 1976-77 series.
