MARK GREATBATCH'S third Test century helped raise New Zealand spirits and a first innings lead on the second day against Pakistan in Hamilton yesterday.
In a one-off Test of fluctuating fortunes, New Zealand held a 40- run advantage with two wickets standing in reply to Pakistan who, with the exception of Javed Miandad's 92, had batted poorly in making 216.
New Zealand began yesterday on 23 without loss and Greatbatch and Blair Hartland took the score to 106 at lunch. At that stage, New Zealand looked set to build a match-winning total. By the end of the second session, though, they had slipped to 168 for 5.
Greatbatch then found a useful partner in the wicketkeeper Adam Parore, who partnered him for 94 minutes in a stand of 61.
Dropped twice in his innings of 133, by Asif Mujtaba at short leg and Inzamam-ul-Haq at second slip, Greatbach was finally dismissed leg before to Waqar Younis 10 minutes before the close, when New Zealand were 256 for 8 with Danny Morrison and Michael Owens still to bat.
Waqar picked up his third wicket by removing Murphy Su'a, who had taken 5 for 73 in Pakistan's innings, with the last ball of the day.
