Cricket: Round-Up: Vaughan a thorn in the side

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE, five points behind second-placed Leicestershire in the Championship with a game in hand, were stalled by two of Gloucestershire's promising newcomers at Bristol yesterday, writes Adam Szreter.

Tim Hancock, 20, and Justin Vaughan, on the shortlist for the New Zealand World Cup squad, put on 141 to help Gloucestershire from 113 for 6 to 346 all out at the close. Hancock fell for 82, one of four wickets for David Capel, while Vaughan was a run short of his maiden Championship century.

Devon Malcolm weighed in with 5 for 45, his best of the season, as Derbyshire dismissed Glamorgan for 170 at Chesterfield, the home side ending on 93 for 2; and Richard Stemp, Worcestershire's slow left-armer, took five wickets for the third time this summer in Somerset's 293 for 9 at Weston-Super- Mare. South African Richard Snell top-scored with 75.

Mark Nicholas won the final first-class toss at Bournemouth and made his best score of the season, 95, in Hampshire's 341 for 8 against Middlesex. Jon Ayling and Adrian Aymes added half-centuries.
