Cricket: Silverwood's endeavour wasted

CHRIS SILVERWOOD produced an eventful opening over of the final day at Taunton yesterday before Yorkshire slipped to a six-wicket defeat to Somerset.

Resuming on 20 for 2 and needing only another six runs to clinch victory in the County Championship match, the home side began in style with Piran Holloway pulling Silverwood's first ball for four.

But after Holloway had taken a single off the next delivery, Mike Burns was pinned lbw by his first ball of the morning and departed for six. Two balls later Silverwood struck again as Jason Kerr pulled ambitiously only to top edge to Anthony McGrath at gully. Silverwood ended his over with 2 for 5 and final figures of 4-0-11-4.

Rob Turner kept out the first ball of the second over before claiming the winning single off the next delivery.

Jamie Cox, the Somerset captain, believes his side can challenge for trophies this season, providing they show self-belief. "There is so much talent in our squad and if I can make the boys believe in themselves a bit more we will be very competitive," said Cox.
