SHANE WARNE, the Australian spinner, took three wickets as South Africa lost four second-innings wickets in 30 balls in the final session of the fourth day of the second Test in Cape Town yesterday.
At close of play South Africa were 100 for 6 - a lead of only 26. Australia, losing their last five first-innings wickets for 17, were dismissed for 435 in their first innings with Craig Matthews taking four wickets in 16 balls to give him 5 for 80 - his first five- wicket haul in Test matches.
Steve Waugh, with 86, and Ian Healy, who scored 61, set a record Australian sixth-wicket partnership against South Africa of 108. Healy then had further cause for celebration when he became the fifth wicketkeeper to score 2,000 runs and complete 200 dismissals in Tests.
South Africa's other wickets fell when Hansie Cronje was brilliantly caught and bowled by Steve Waugh, who also trapped Andrew Hudson leg before. Kepler Wessels was run out by Allan Border.
