Australia win by innings and 60 runs

AUSTRALIA crushed New Zealand by an innings and 60 runs with a day to spare in the first Test in Christchurch yesterday.

In a second lacklustre batting display New Zealand crumbled to the spin of Shane Warne and the pace of Merv Hughes and Craig McDermott to be all out for 243 in their second innings shortly after tea. Only Ken Rutherford showed any resolve as New Zealand attempted to overhaul their 303-run first-innings deficit.

For Australia, it was their first Test win in New Zealand since 1982 and they are well set to win the three-match series, something they have never done in New Zealand.

Warne, who won the second Test for Australia against the West Indies earlier in the season with 7 for 52, won the man-of-the-match award with 4 for 63 in the second innings and match figures of 7 for 86. In a disciplined display, he rarely bowled a loose ball and none of the batsmen mastered him as he extracted sharp turn at times, bowling Dipak Patel around his legs.

Of the New Zealand batsmen only Rutherford came out of the match with credit. After scoring 57 in the first innings, he made 102 in the second, scoring with stylish drives and cuts. In one over he off- drove Warne for four and then smashed him straight over the sightscreen for six. He hit nine fours and one six in his four-hour innings, his third Test century.
