The Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne claimed five wickets in 15 deliveries as his best performance in a limited-overs international sent the West Indies stumbling to an eight-wicket defeat in Sydney yesterday.

Warne's match figures of 5 for 33 in 9.3 overs in his 61st international eclipsed his previous best of 4 for 19 against New Zealand three years ago.

Brian Lara, who made 26, was among the batting failures as the tourists collapsed to 161 in the World Series at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Australia cruised to 162 for 2 with eight overs to spare.

World Series (Sydney): West Indies 161 (Warne 5-33); Australia 162 for 2 (M Waugh, 83no). Australia win by 8 wkts.
