Pakistan win by an innings and 29 runs

Clive Lloyd, the West Indies manager, and their captain, Courtney Walsh, attacked the performance of their team as they lost the second Test against Pakistan by an innings and 29 runs in Rawalpindi yesterday.

Lloyd said the West Indies performance was "unbearable", while Walsh criticised the batsmen for their failure. But both refused to blame the defeat on reports that there is a captaincy rift within the tourists' ranks.

After West Indies had fallen to a series defeat, both men instead blamed the losses on a lacklustre performance by a team that has a number of talented players.

"We did not put up a good performance, to say the least," Lloyd said. "It was the best pitch in the world after Brisbane and I must congratulate the groundsman, but it is difficult to put in words the way we performed."

Lloyd, who led the West Indies to a record 27 Tests without defeat between 1981-82 and 1984-85, was clearly disappointed and disgruntled over back- to-back innings defeats. They last lost two consecutive Tests by an innings against England in 1957.

"It is unbearable for me and for everyone back home," Lloyd said. But he dismissed claims of a captaincy battle between Brian Lara and Walsh.

The West Indies leave for Karachi today to play the final Test starting on 6 December, their last match of the tour before leaving for Sharjah to play in the quadrangular tournament which also features England.
