Alastair Cook ready to lead from the front
England's new one-day captain Alastair Cook was given an early chance to prove his one-day credentials after losing the toss and being asked to bat in the first one-day international against Sri Lanka.
Cook, making his return to the side as skipper after a 15-month absence, was leading a side containing four other changes from the one soundly beaten in the Twenty20 at Bristol on Saturday.
Ian Bell, a surprising omission from that match, was restored, with fit-again Tim Bresnan back in England colours for the first time since the losing World Cup quarter-final against the same opponents.
Jonathan Trott and James Anderson, left out of the Twenty20 squad, were also in the XI, as was Jade Dernbach on debut, with Luke Wright, Ravi Bopara, Chris Woakes, Michael Lumb and Samit Patel making way.
Sri Lanka welcomed back captain Tillakaratne Dilshan from a broken thumb, while 41-year-old Sanath Jayasuriya was playing his 445th and final ODI before retirement.
