Ashes 2015: Brad Haddin set to be dropped for Second Test with Peter Nevill put through his paces to deputise for wicketkeeper

Haddin has struggled for form with the bat in the last year and dropped Joe Root and 0 before he made 134 in the First Test

Brad Haddin is set to miss the Second Ashes Test at Lord's.

The Australia wicketkeeper took only a small part in training earlier on Tuesday, with his deputy, Peter Nevill, put through a rigorous session.

Australian sources now believe Haddin, who has played 66 Tests, will be on the sidelines when the action starts on Thursday. That would mean a Test debut for Nevill, the 29-year-old New South Wales player who has made 55 first-class appearances but has never featured in an international match.

Haddin was one of Australia’s stars as they claimed a 5-0 whitewash over England in the 2013-14 series Down Under. At 37, this was almost certain to be his last Ashes series and it began badly for him at Cardiff last week.

Haddin dropped England batsman Joe Root before he had scored in the first innings. Root went on to make 134, helping England win the Test, and secured the man-of-the-match award.

Nevill is a proven batsman in first-class cricket, in which he averages 44. He would slot into the No7 position in place of Haddin.

If Haddin does miss out, it is another blow for Australia in what has been a difficult start to the tour. Injury forced Ryan Harris into retirement before the Test series began, while fellow fast bowler Mitchell Starc was a doubt for Lord’s due to an ankle problem.
