Chris Tremlett, the former England fast bowler, has revealed the torment endured by Steve Finn during his nightmarish Ashes tour of 2013-14, which resulted in him being sent home and branded “unselectable” by the one-day coach Ashley Giles.

Finn returned to Test duty after two years at Edgbaston last week, replacing the injured Mark Wood. He took eight wickets and was Man of the Match as England took a 2-1 lead in the Ashes. Tremlett, who has not played for England since the First Test of that disastrous Ashes tour, says Finn was given the cold shoulder.

“Steve was bowling at a stump, the management took him out of bowling at batters most of the time,” he said. “He did his own drills, his own technique stuff.

“I remember at Perth, it was 45C and he was bowling at a stump on his own for an hour and a half. He just needed to get away from it, get some games and find some confidence. You saw in this game how wickets can change a bowler – Steve got those wickets in the first innings and his speed went up immediately.”
