Mark Butcher steered England to a sensational six–wicket victory in the fourth Test at Headingley with an unbeaten century as the hosts made light of work of reaching the 315–run target.
The Surrey left–hander hit a Test best 173 not out as England averted an Ashes whitewash against the Aussies, who had won the first three Tests of the series.
Butcher shared in a third–wicket stand of 181 with captain Nasser Hussain (55) – the pair coming together after openers Mike Atherton (8) and Marcus Trescothick (10) had departed with just 33 runs on the board.
