County Championship round-up: Hundred club still eludes Ramprakash

Mark Ramprakash failed once again to reach his 100th first-class century but his Surrey side managed 356 for 7 after a poor start against top-of-the-table Nottinghamshire.

This was Ramprakash's ninth attempt at reaching the landmark since his last century back in early May. It was left to Usman Afzaal (89) to lead the recovery as Surrey tried to lift themselves off the foot of Division One.

With Broad and Sidebottom on England duty at Lord's, Darren Pattinson led the Nottinghamshire attack at Trent Bridge, taking 4 for 54.

Yorkshire will tomorrow learn their fate after their appeal against expulsion from theTwenty20 Cup. In their game against Kent at Canterbury Robert Key's only first-class century of the season held Yorkshire at bay as leg spinner Adil Rashid took three wickets.

Stephen Harmison finished the day as Division One's leading wicket-taker as he picked up four Somerset scalps to take his tally to 33 for the season. Despite that, Somerset secured three batting points thanks to a century from the South African Zander de Bruyn.

Andrew Flintoff again failed to impress with the bat in the longer form of the game, lasting three balls before being caught behind as Lancashire made hard work of it against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl. Flintoff has managed one score over 50 in the County Championship in seven attempts. The Lancashire batsman struggled as they finished the day on 229 for 5, with the exception of New Zealand's Lou Vincent with 83.

In Division Two, Glamorgan's batting woes continued as they were bowled out for their lowest score of the season with Pakistan leg spinner Danish Kaneria taking his second five-wicket haul. Glamorgan have taken one batting point in their last three games. In reply, Essex were 54 for no wicket when rain stopped play at Cardiff.

Promotion hopefuls Middlesex achieved two batting points with the help of a century from the 21-year-old Eoin Morgan against struggling Gloucestershire at Bristol.

In another rain-affected day at New Road, Northamptonshire piled pressure on Worcestershire as they looked to build a sizeable first-innings lead. This was mainly the result of the continuation of Lance Klusener's form with the bat. The South African followed up his 94 in his last innings with another half-century, his sixth of the season.

At Derby, Leicestershire, who are challenging for promotion, struggled to 112 for 6 in reply to Derbyshire's first-innings score of 208. Earlier in the day James Allenby continued his good form with the ball, taking 3 for 19.
