County Cricket round-up: Durham march on thanks to Gordon Muchall
Durham remain favourites to seal a sixth County Championship victory but Sussex put up stubborn resistance on day three of their Division One clash at Arundel.
Paul Collingwood’s table-toppers posted a victory target of 514 for the hosts, who have never made more than 455 in the fourth innings. But Sussex closed on 114 for 2 to set up an intriguing final day.
Earlier, Durham were all out for 413, thanks to Gordon Muchall’s composed hundred, his first since last May, and a thumping 91 by Australian John Hastings.
Peter Trego led the way with 79 as Somerset lifted themselves off the foot of the First Division table with an unlikely two-wicket win over Nottinghamshire at Taunton.
The hosts reached a target of 401, their second-highest ever Championship run-chase, despite Matt Carter completing match figures 10 for 195 on his first-class debut.
Three late wickets handed Glamorgan hope of victory in the Division Two match against Surrey, who lead by 245 with two wickets left.
Hampshire have been hit with a suspended points deduction and a £4,000 fine due to persistent disciplinary problems.
