Scotland’s Cricket World Cup campaign will come to an end when they face Australia on Saturday, but it’s already over for all-time leading wicket-taker Majid Haq after he posted a race-related message on Twitter following his non-selection for the defeat to Sri Lanka this morning.

Having already lost all four of their matches at this year’s World Cup, Scotland crashed to a 148-run defeat against the Sri Lankans in Hobart on Wednesday, with their elimination already confirmed due to the defeats to Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

However, Haq was not selected for the match, and later posted a tweet that implied he was left out because of the colour of his skin, before deleting the tweet some time after.

Haq said on Twitter: “Always tougher when your [sic] in the minority!! #colour #race."

Appearing to take a tough stance on Haq’s outburst, Scotland immediately sent the off-spin bowler back home, and he will take no part in the final match against the co-hosts Australia on 14 March.

A statement from Cricket Scotland read: "Following a breach of Cricket Scotland's internal code of conduct, international team member, Majid Haq, is travelling home from the ICC World Cup.

"No further statement will be issued until internal processes have been completed in due course."

Haq was born in Scotland and is of Pakistani descent, and leads the way in both One-Day International wickets and appearances, having taken 60 wickets in 209 appearances.

The 32-year-old has not enjoyed the best of times at the World Cup though, and has taken just three wickets in four matches in Australia and New Zealand, with his struggles matches by Scotland given their early elimination.

Despite having three half-centuries to his name and previously opening the batting at the 2007 Cricket World Cup, Haq managed a best score of just 31 at the tournament, which came against fellow associate member Afghanistan.

Haq does have previous history when it comes to being punished for ill-thought comments made on social media, having been slapped with a three-match ban that he will serve at the start of the West District Cricket Union season.
