Durham 234 &amp; 353 Hampshire 256 &amp; 104 <i>(Durham win by 227 runs)</i>: Thorp's thunder sends Hampshire crashing

Callum Thorp sent Hampshire hurtling to a shattering defeat in three days to complete the match of his life and help propel Durham back up the table.

When they set out to run down the 332 runs needed there really had appeared to be a genuine chance of a Hampshire victory, despite the fact that they were having to chase more than any other side has ever done at The Rose Bowl.

But in the end, as they subsided to their lowest ever total against Durham, Hampshire were left wondering how it all happened.

A look at Thorp's match figures of 11-97 - including 5-42 in the second innings - would tell them. Thorp sparked a collapse that was as dramatic as it was shocking. Hampshire had been plugging away gamely at the target and at 83 for 2 had looked secure enough.

Then Thorp had John Crawley caught behind. After a further 10 balls four more Hampshire batsmen had followed him into the home dressing-room. Not even the Hampshire captain Shane Warne, who flies home to Australia on Sunday, could save them.

Durham captain Dale Benkenstein, who had earlier scored a gritty half-century, did his bit with three wickets. That Hampshire's target got as high as it did was down to their attack, who just could not pierce the Durham defences.

Benkenstein shared in a couple of chunky stands, first with Gary Scott, then, more tellingly with Philip Mustard. And it all added up to too great a total for the home side to overtake.
