England officials described the attack on Sri Lanka's team bus in Pakistan today as "despicable."

"The ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) is shocked and saddened by the senseless attack on the Sri Lankan cricketers and match officials by terrorists in Lahore today," the ECB said in a statement.

"Our thoughts are with the families of those who have been killed or injured in this despicable attack."

Gunmen attacked Sri Lanka's team bus with rifles, grenades and rockets, wounding six players and a British coach, while it was being driven to the Gaddafi stadium for the third day of the second test against Pakistan.

Five policemen and a bus driver were killed in the attack and the test match has been cancelled.

"The ECB has also been in touch with ... the Sri Lanka team to offer their thoughts and condolences," the ECB added.

England are due to visit Pakistan in February and March next year but the ECB did not comment on what effect the attacks might have on tour plans.
