David Stiff and Samit Patel combined to bowl Australia out for just 164 but England Under-19s still finished day one of the second Test in a spot of trouble in Melbourne. Patel's 4 for 33 and Stiff's 4 for 32 gave England the chance to establish a significant first-innings lead.
But then the pace of Grant Sullivan and Aaron Bird proved the tourists' undoing as they reached stumps in the four-day match still 66 runs behind with just three wickets in hand.
Australia, who won the toss and chose to bat, lost openers Liam Davis and Matthew Harrison cheaply. England followed suit when they lost both openers early on and descended to 42 for 5 at one stage. Even a resilient Tim Bresnan (30 not out) could not prevent them from closing on a perilous 98 for 7.
