Essex kept up the pressure at the top of the County Championship Second Division by taking control of their match with bottom-placed Durham at the Riverside yesterday.
The visitors' last five wickets added 95 for a first-innings score of 465 before their attack reduced Durham to 99 for 4. The opener Michael Gough was unbeaten on 41 when play was halted for bad light.
Honours were even at the end of the second day of Worcestershire's fixture at Nottinghamshire after centuries from David Leatherdale and Steve Rhodes. The visitors slipped to 120 for 6 in reply to Nottinghamhire's first innings 404, but Leatherdale (110no) and Rhodes (122no) led their side to 362 for 6.
