James Anderson record: Bowler dismisses Martin Guptill to take 400th wicket for England during second Test against New Zealand

Anderson struck in his second over and dismissed Kane Williamson for a duck in the same over once the teams returned from a rain delay

James Anderson has become the first English bowler to take 400 Test wickets after removing Martin Guptill on Day One of the second Test at Headingley.

Play was delayed until after lunch as persistent early morning rain saw the first session washed out, but, when the toss eventually took place at 1pm, Alastair Cook won and decided to put New Zealand in to bat.

After their dramatic victory at Lord’s, England named an unchanged side, while New Zealand brought in Luke Ronchi for the injured Corey Anderson.

The match started with Anderson needing to claim just one more scalp to reach the milestone, having been frustrated in his pursuit of the figure on Day Five at Lord’s, despite picking up his 399th wicket with only his second ball of the day.

However it took just eight deliveries for Anderson to strike at Headingley, Guptill edging a full delivery to Ian Bell at second slip, moments before play was interrupted once more by rain.

Anderson, England’s all time leading wicket taker in Test match cricket, becomes only the 12th bowler in the game’s history to join the exclusive 400 club and is now just five wickets behind West Indies great Curtley Ambrose.

He reached the landmark in his 104th Test with the wickets coming at an average of 29.29 and has the most Test wickets of any bowler still playing the game, with South Africa’s Dale Steyn just behind him on 396.

Anderson’s strike gave England the perfect start and it got even better when play resumed after a brief rain delay, Kane Williamson edging the second ball he faced to Jos Buttler behind the stumps as New Zealand slipped to 2/2 in just the third over of their innings.
