An extraordinary innings by Samit Patel handed Nottinghamshire a lifeline in their Friends Provident Trophy quarter-final here in Chester-le-Street after it seemed holders Durham were set to romp through to the last four with little resistance.

After Chris Read had won the toss and chosen to bat - surprisingly, perhaps, after yesterday's rain - the visitors' brittle top order was found wanting again and wickets for Callum Thorp (two) and Mark Davies, combined with a brilliant run out by Neil McKenzie reduced them to 34-4.

Opener Will Jefferson, who had lost his first-team slot but was recalled after scoring runs in the second eleven, perished to a fifth-ball duck, and England's Graeme Swann could manage only 18 in the pinch hitter role. McKenzie's athletic pick-up and throw-in from mid-on got rid of danger-man Adam Voges at the bowler's end.

Patel and Bilal Shafayat briefly steadied Notts but the departure of the Shafayat and Chris Read - Ben and Steve Harmison claiming a wicket each - sparked another slide, and when off-spinner Gareth Breese dismissed Mark Ealham and Paul Franks in quick order, Notts were 102-8.

But there was no stopping Patel, who batted magnificently, charging from 51 to 101 in 30 balls with Darren Pattinson and then Charlie Shreck hanging around for as long as they could at the other end, the hard-hitting former England under-19 batsman completing his first one-day hundred with a mighty straight six off Breese.

He was finally bowled by Ben Harmison for 114 (with two sixes and 17 fours) as he made room for another big swing but the last two wickets had put on a precious 86 runs, giving Nottinghamshire's bowlers rather more to defend than had seemed remotely likely.
