With the cricket season at its peak, it seems a little strange that the start of the football season is but a month away - but it does explain the extinction of a particular species, the cricketing footballer.

Time was a Compton or a Fry could play at the top level in both sports with no worries of an overlap. This is a first eleven of the most notable.
