New Zealand's Scott Styris matched his effort at the crease by claiming two wickets to tame the West Indies batsmen on day one of the first Test in Auckland.

His 103 not out gave the hosts a more respectable first-innings total of 275. Styris then helped hold the West Indies to 51 for 3, giving New Zealand a 224-run lead at the close. He claimed the wickets of Chris Gayle (25) and Ian Bradshaw (0), while Chris Martin dismissed Daren Ganga for 20.

Earlier in the day, the West Indies won the toss and put their hosts in to bat at Eden Park, and Bradshaw made a big impact by having a hand in three of the four wickets taken before lunch as New Zealand struggled to 70 for 4.

Styris and Nathan Astle did their best to rescue the innings after lunch. Each claimed half-centuries, but got little help from their team-mates as New Zealand reached 216 for 7 at tea.

West Indies bowler Dwayne Smith was the tormentor after the interval, claiming all three wickets. The first of his victims was Astle (51), who struck up a 71-run partnership with Styris. Brendon McCullum then contributed 19 before Smith bowled him. Daniel Vettori fared little better and was caught by Gayle off Smith for six.

Following tea, Styris dragged New Zealand to 275, with James Franklin adding 14 before falling to Gayle, who then dismissed Shane Bond for three. Bradshaw took his third wicket, removing Chris Martin for a duck.
