Senegal's victory, when announced, evoked no reaction whatsoever from a good crowd, enjoying breezy sunshine, who were either cricket diehards or possibly Manchester City supporters expecting to blame Fabien Barthez. Alternatively, they could have been engrossed in this summit match between the two teams most expected to win the First Division Championship.

They were certainly torn between elation and apprehension. There is always anticipation in the debut of a new fast bowler and Lancashire unveiled the second, after Kyle Hogg, of their new generation, 19-year-old Jimmy Anderson who is tall with raw pace.

On a dry, responsive pitch he was lively but nervous and it was his over-pitching, presented to Mark Ramprakash, that enabled Surrey to recover from the early loss of Michael Carberry, a juggled catch involving first and second slips.

While acting captain Ian Ward dug in, Ramprakash launched a stylish counter-attack on the young fast bowlers that appeared to have laid the foundation for a very big score until, chasing a second run, Ramprakash gambled on Hogg's arm, near the cover boundary, and lost.

The apprehension arose from the appearance of Gary Keedy after only 23 overs, a hint that Saqlain Mushtaq and Ian Salisbury could be enjoying themselves later today. Without addition, Nadim Shahid misread Keedy's length and although Ally Brown hit the left-arm spinner for two prodigious sixes into the V, he was beaten, in the flight, and bowled.

Surrey, too, have a Championship fast bowling debutant in 21-year-old Rikki Clarke, who can also bat, and together with Jon Batty, himself 51 not out at the close, he took the score from a wobbly 177 for 5 past the arrival of the new ball.
