Round-up: Lara runs out of partners in India win

India claimed an unexpected 16-run win against the West Indies to keep alive their hopes of reaching the DLF Cup final in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

The Indians were whittled out for 162 in just 39.3 overs, setting their opponents a seemingly straightforward target for victory. But the Windies never recovered from the loss of the opener Shivnarine Chanderpaul with the score on 44, and lost a steady stream of wickets thereafter as they were bowled out for 146.

The captain Brian Lara, batting at No 9, finished unbeaten on 40 but he ran out of partners in the run-chase. Chanderpaul made 21 before pulling a delivery from Munaf Patel straight to Virender Sehwag at short midwicket. Ramnaresh Sarwan (two) followed two overs later, this time caught behind by the wicketkeeper Mahendra Dhoni. When the opener Runako Morton (27) edged Sri Sreesanth to first slip Rahul Dravid, who juggled the ball to Dhoni, the collapse continued.
