S Africa 226 & 422-dec New Zealand 118 & 172-9: Ten of the best for Steyn condemns New Zealand to bleak first Test defeat
Dale Steyn took five more wickets to lead South Africa to a crushing victory over New Zealand in the first Test in Johannesburg yesterday.
Resuming on the fourth day on 57 for 3 in pursuit of 531, the tourists got off to a terrible start when Scott Styris was dismissed without adding to his overnight score of 16. The wickets continued to fall, Steyn's 5 for 59 coming after his 5 for 34 in the first innings.
Styris edged Steyn to the wicketkeeper Mark Boucher and then the pace bowler picked up his third scalp of the innings when he had Brendon McCullum caught at gully by Herschelle Gibbs. Michael Papps then edged to second slip off the bowling of Jacques Kallis.
Jacob Oram and Daniel Vettori saw New Zealand to 148 for 6 at lunch, but Oram had not added to his interval score of 40 when he chipped Paul Harris to Andre Nel at deep mid-on.
Steyn completed his 10-wicket haul when he had Iain O'Brien caught off bat and pad at short-leg by Hashim Amla and Chris Martin bowled through the gate, neither troubling the scorers. The injured Shane Bond did not bat, meaning nine wickets were enough to secure a comfortable triumph for the hosts.
The second Test is at Centurion Park on Friday.
