Keith Medleycott, the Surrey head coach, has added Franklyn Rose to his squad today for the crucial County Championship First Division match with Kent at Canterbury.

Surrey and Sussex are clear at the top of the table, but Lancashire, Middlesex and Kent all have outside hopes of the title.

Rose, a former West Indies pace bowler, has replaced Saqlain Mushtaq as the county's overseas player until the end of the season. Saqlain has completed his spell with the county champions and linked up with the Pakistan squad for the third Test against Bangladesh.

Kent, meanwhile, are likely to field the same starting XI that defeated Nottinghamshire by nine wickets last month.

Ian Brayshaw, the director of cricket, will keep a close eye on the Canterbury wicket when deciding on his bowlers. Paceman Alamgir Sheriyar should keep his place in the line-up if the pitch is green, but James Tredwell may get the nod if the pitch looks conducive to spin.
