The County Champions, Sussex, are still looking for their first win but yesterday at Hove they could only stand and watch as Northamptonshire, also winless, progressed to 315 for 5 with their new captain, David Sales, compiling an unbeaten 153.

Sales struck 20 fours and two sixes having come in with his side in some trouble on 53 for 3. Usman Afzaal chipped in with 69 in a fourth-wicket stand of 181.

In the Second Division, the Australian leg-spinner Stuart MacGill picked up 6 for 81 as Nottinghamshire dismissed Durham for 300 at Trent Bridge, Jon Lewis scoring 77 and Gordon Muchall 60. Glamorgan reached 408 for 7 against Derbyshire at Derby, openers Mark Wallace (87) and the Australian Matthew Elliott (77) adding 168.

At Taunton Essex declared on 400 for 9, James Middlebrook scoring a career-best 115 in a seventh-wicket stand of 175 with Graham Napier (79). Will Jefferson made 95 while the paceman Andrew Caddick claimed 6 for 80.
