Tendulkar makes history with 13,000th Test run

The Left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan and the paceman Shahadat Hossain took four wickets each as Bangladesh left India struggling on 213 for 8 before bad light brought an early end to the opening day of the first Test here yesterday.Sachin Tendulkar, already the world's leading scorer in both Test and one-day cricket, set another record in the first Test against Bangladesh here yesterday, becoming the first batsman to amass 13,000 Test runs .

On an unconvincing opening day that saw India close on 213 for 8, the Little Master provided the highlight, reaching the mark with a boundary off spinner Mahmudullah.

The left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan and paceman Shahadat Hossain took four wickets each as the hosts left India struggling before bad light brought an early end to proceedings.

Tendulkar stood firm as wickets fell at the other end, giving India some hope of recovery. Tendulkar will resume batting today with Ishant Sharma. The Mumbai-born batsman had an early scare when he was dropped by Imrul Kayes at slip off Shafiul Islam on 16, but took advantage of the reprieve, ending the day unbeaten on 76 .

Opener Virender Sehwag, leading India in the absence of injured captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, was the first batsman to be dismissed in the second over of the post-lunch session. Tamim Iqbal took a simple catch at short extra cover to end Sehwag's brisk innings of 52 off 51 balls that included nine boundaries. Gautam Gambhir followed Sehwag in the next over on 23.

Shahadat also bowled Rahul Dravid for 4 before Shakib had VVS Laxman stumped by Mushfiqur Rahim for 7. Yuvraj Singh lofted a simple catch to Rubel Hossain off Shakib for 12, while Shahadat returned for a third spell to take Dinesh Karthik for a duck. Shahadat trapped Amit Mishra lbw for 14 before Zaheer Khan was dismissed for 11, giving Shakib his fourth wicket.
