Vaughan may have to give up one-day game

The England captain, Michael Vaughan, accepts that he may have to consider not appearing in one-day internationals if he is to keep playing at the highest level.

The Yorkshire batsman has suffered a torrid time with injuries, most recently being forced to fly home from the Test series in India with a knee problem.

Vaughan is focused on returning to the Test arena for the three-match series against Sri Lanka starting next month. He said: "The most important thing for me is to just get back playing cricket and then there are decisions I will probably have to make.

"I love playing cricket and while I am given the opportunity to play both forms of the game, I would love to continue. But in the future if a stage comes whereby missing out on one form of the game will prolong my cricket for a few years then of course that decision will be made. But until I get back playing cricket with all the work I'm doing now it is very difficult to say what I'm going to do."

Andrew Flintoff led England in Vaughan's absence in India and Vaughan acknowledges there are now ready-made replacements should his worst fears be realised. Vaughan added: "Freddie did a tremendous job. It was a very difficult position he was put in.

"When the captain does go eventually - because you are not going to be captain forever - it should not be a massive loss."
