However, Hampshire gained their fourth win of the season after Billy Taylor took five for 73 as Essex were bowled out for 235 in their second innings.
In Division One, Middlesex were 151 for 2 at close of play in their match against Gloucestershire, with Owais Shah on 58 not out. Middlesex, dismissed for a first innings total of 383, still trail Gloucestershire, who declared at 693 for 9, by 161 runs.
Northamptonshire are 178 for the loss of four wickets against Warwickshire, with captain David Sales 55 not out. Earlier, the visitors responded to Northants' first innings total of 329 by racking up 524 all out, with Nick Knight scoring a century.
